African Culture - African Arts

Students work with an artist, learning the music, theater, dance, and arts of various African cultures. They create their own art or performance based on the culture and art form they are studying, including masks, textile design, sculpture, ceramics, and jewelry.

African Cultures - Ancient Art

Students explore the role of art in a variety of ancient cultures. They then select one culture to study in depth and create works of art or artifacts based on that culture. Projects range from Mayan temples to Egyptian tomb paintings.

Afro Brazilian Self-Defense/Capoeira Dance

Afro Brazil Arts works with Leap to teach students community empowerment through a self-defense/dance. Students learn to sing Brazilian songs, play Brazilian musical instruments and develop a physical discipline.

Animation

Working with a professional animator, students learn how to make animated videos using flip books, claymation, or paper cutouts on subjects ranging from verbs to volcanoes.

Architecture

Professional architect teaches students to design and build model structures, environments or sets. Focusing on creative problem solving, this program teaches mathematics concepts and basic physics, and develops multicultural awareness.

Architecture: From Cottages to Castles

Teaches students how to create floor plans, elevations, and architectural drawings. Using these techniques, students create scale model structures and environments. The program incorporates the history of architecture, and includes walking tours and visits to cultural institutions.

Asian Culture-Asian Arts

Students learn the dance, music, theater, and arts and crafts of various Asian cultures. Students create their own art or performance based on the particular culture and art form they are studying such as calligraphy, sumi-e painting, masks, and textile designs.

Book Arts

Students illustrate their books using many techniques, including printmaking, collage, water color, and calligraphy. They also learn to make books in a variety of formats, including accordion, pop-up, and fold-out books.

Building a Classroom Art Museum

Students visit museums, study the relevant art, learn art techniques, and then create original works of art applying what they have learned. Students create their own exhibits, which include both their own artwork and the examples of the art on which their work is based.

Students learn to read music, sing in two or more parts, compose simple songs, and perform before an audience. Students are also introduced to various kinds of music from jazz to classical. Music from diverse cultures is included to provide a rich multicultural experience.

Caribbean Culture-Caribbean Arts

Students learn the music, theater, dance, and/or arts and crafts of various Caribbean cultures. They design and create Caribbean art forms as masks, textiles and sculpture, or they work on performance pieces.

Cartooning

Students learn the history and art of cartooning from a professional cartoonist. They use their newly acquired arts skills to create their own political cartoons, comic books, and posters. This program enhances literacy and develops social studies skills.

Ceramics

Teaches students various forms of ceramics including hand, coil, slab building, clay sculpture, and relief tiling. The artist teaches decorative techniques, and the use of the wheel in schools that have one. Students also study the ceramics of different cultures and historic periods.

Computer Graphics

Using the school’s computer graphics programs, students learn desktop publishing, graphics manipulation, drawing, scanning, or morphing. They study the art of graphic design, then applying what they have learned, produce their own publications, flyers, posters, or brochures.

Costume Design

A professional costume designer helps students create costumes for original or existing plays. Students look at the history of costume design and the materials used to create costumes, draw their designs and then create their own costumes using inexpensive, readily available materials.
