Active Learning Leads to Literacy - ALLL

ALLL uses drama, visual arts, music, creative movement, cooking, games, and storytelling to improve young and emerging reader's decoding skills, vocabulary, language fluency, reading comprehension and writing skills. ALLL activities greatly increases the literacy level of students, as measured by the ECLAS test.

Animal Tales

This read-aloud book for grades K-2 includes 12 fully illustrated stories from countries around the world. The culturally sensitive games and projects that accompany each text allow students to try on other cultural behaviors and encourage them to be open to new ideas and different cultural perspectives.

Biography/Autobiography: Portraits/ Self-Portraits

Working with a Leap artist, students read, research and write biographies or autobiographies. The students study portraiture from Van Gogh to Andy Warhol. Finally, students learn various painting techniques and use their new art skills to create portraits or self-portraits to accompany their writing.

Bookmaking

Students work with a visual artist to illustrate their own books using many techniques, including printmaking, collage, water color, and calligraphy. They also learn to make books in a variety of formats, including accordion, pop-up, and fold-out books.

Building a Classroom Literary Museum

Students create museum exhibits on subjects ranging from authors to African folktales. They write biographies, interpret literature, and then respond with their own stories or expository writing. The students then create artwork, dioramas, murals, and diagrams to exhibit alongside their own writings.

Cartooning

Students learn the history and art of cartooning from a professional cartoonist. They use their newly acquired arts skills to create their own political cartoons, comic books, and posters. This program enhances literacy and develops social studies skills.

Comets, Asteroids and the Solar System/Adventure, Fiction and Fact

Students read nonfiction and fictional stories about space. Working with a LEAP consultant, students create projects ranging from games or mobiles to writing their own stories or creating audiovisual productions.
